Students will comprehend major themes and connections between Hamlet and other tragic characters.

Write Away: Download PART 5 ROOTS and PART 5 VOCAB to prepare for next Wednesday's test (April 5)

Assignment:  Follow Mr. Irsik's instructions today.

Step 1: On the handout, circle/highlight certain words from the Hamlet passage that you do not understand. We will go over these definitions in class and discuss what the passage says.

Step 2: In Shakespeare's works, comedies typically involve conflicts between characters with fixed traits. In his tragedies, the conflicts are internal and involve the characters making their own decisions. Based on this definition, get in groups of 3 and discuss how the following modern day characters fall in the tragic category (Anakin Skywalker, Jesse Pinkman, or Rick Grimes). How does this relate to Hamlet?

Step 3: We will conclude with the following short assignment. Hand this in to Mr. Irsik!

Write a 1 paragraph reflection on ONE of the following questions:

- Is there another tragic character/story you can think of and what makes it tragic in relation to the definition we discussed in class?

- By using our definition of Shakespeare's comedy, what is an example of a comedy you can think of and what makes it comedy?

- Would you classify our recent presidential election as comedy or tragedy, why?
